The Library’s Digital Collections team is excited to reveal a new collection of digitized works from renowned artist and educator Robert Huff (1945–2014). A painter, printmaker and sculptor, Huff was a longtime professor at Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus, where he taught for several decades and served as Chair of the Visual Arts Department.
Huff’s collection highlights his long-standing contributions to the local arts community in Miami-Dade County. It includes images of his work from the Library’s Vasari Project archive, his personal collection of pieces provided by his late wife Barbara Young – a former Librarian for the Miami-Dade Public Library System – and photographs of his sculptural work with Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program.
In particular, Huff created two stunning mural installations. One mural, located at Concourse D in Miami International Airport, ran the length of the hall and established a visual connection between the painted (glazed) images and the curved walls of the site. The artwork was decommissioned in the early 2000s.
The second mural was inspired by the east/west orientation of the Palmetto Metrorail Station. The opposite directional views harmonize with passengers on their daily commute. The hand-glazed ceramic tiles provide a visual story linked to the change of light and color throughout the day. Upon entering the platform, the variations of color on the roof structure reflect the warm hues of a rising sun. As passengers return to the station in the afternoon, they are greeted by colors reminiscent of the setting sun, from vibrant reds and oranges to the cool blue tones of the evening.
