Project L.E.A.D. (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade) is an adult literacy program designed to reach out to English speaking adults who are functionally illiterate and have reading and writing skills that are inadequate to cope with the demands of everyday life. They have difficulty or are unable to fill out forms, read to their child or read the instructions on medicine bottle.
Project L.E.A.D. provides free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring to help improve their reading and writing skills. We match adult learners with volunteer tutors who help them achieve self-determined literacy goals.
FOR TUTORS
To be a Project L.E.A.D. Tutor you must be/complete:
- At least eighteen years old
- A high school graduate
- Willing to undergo and pass a fingerprint background check
- Or be certified as a ProLiteracy Worldwide, Laubach Literacy Tutor and present certification
How it Works
After completing a Basic Tutor Workshop or providing a tutor certification from any other Laubach Literacy Organization, you will be matched with an adult learner. The adult learner will set the goals. You will, using various learning strategies and free resources provided by the library, help your adult learner attain those goals. You and the adult learner negotiate a mutually convenient tutoring schedule. All trainings and materials are free.
FOR ADULT LEARNERS
If you are struggling with reading and writing and want help you must:
- Speak English
- Be at least eighteen years old
- Call Project L.E.A.D. to make an appointment.
The program is free, confidential and occurs at a certain time in any public library that you and your volunteer tutor have mutually decided upon. All materials are free. You set the goals and your volunteer tutor helps you attain those goals.
