New State Grant Enables Library to Go Wireless

spacer

Miami, Fl -- A new library service will help alleviate an overwhelming public request for computer-assisted research and projects. The installation of a wireless network will supplement Miami-Dade Public Library’s infrastructure thanks to the Florida Department of State, Division of Library and Information Services (State Library) has awarded a Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant in the amount of $250,000 to help fund the infrastructure and a laptop lending program at all Miami-Dade Public Libraries. The project will thus enable the Library to meet residents’ demand for increased access to the library’s networked information services.

This new wireless network will supplement, rather than replace, the wired Local Area Network (LAN) the Library currently operates. In addition to implementing wireless capabilities in all libraries, the Library will purchase wireless laptop computers for patron and staff use within the libraries. The new wireless network will also be able to accommodate patrons who bring their own personal laptops equipped with wireless cards. The Library’s computer team is already working on implementing the project. The new service is expected to be fully operational in the fall of 2005.
