Miami-Dade Public Library to Celebrate Children's Book Week - November 12-18 -Children 6-12 are invited to participate in the annual “Make-a-Bookmark” contest

 (MIAMI, October 25, 2007)-  The Miami-Dade Public Library System is inviting children to discover the joys of reading during National Children’s Book Week, November 12-18. This annual event is designed to introduce young readers and their families to new books, authors and illustrators, and to the many resources available at their public library.

I Spy a Great Book @ My Libraryis the theme for the Library System’s series of special events, which kicks off on Thursday, November 1, at 3:30 p.m. with a storytelling showcase at the West Kendall Regional Library. Throughout the month, Andy Runton, creator of the Owly series, author and illustrator Carla Golembe (a Story of Surfing, the Story of Hula), Pura Belpré honor medal winner Lucía Gonzalez, and many other authors and performers will appear at library branches throughout the county.Miami Dolphins Football players and alumni will join in the celebration by visiting branches and reading to children.

Starting November 1 through November 18, budding artists ages 6-12, are invited to participate in the annual “Make-a-Bookmark” contest by submitting a drawing of their favorite character or scene from a book they love.  All entrants in the contest will be honored at parties to be held at each branch library. The creator of the winning bookmark will receive several prizes including a basket of art supplies, and will have their bookmark reproduced for use by the Library System during 2008. Contest entry forms are available at all branch libraries and the deadline for submission is Monday, November 19.

Celebrate Children’s Book Week with Andy Runton, the creator of Owly, as heshowcases the kind, but lonely, little owl that’s always searching for new friends and adventure. Runton’s animated and heartwarming style has made him a favorite of both fans and critics alike. The Owly series has earned him multiple awards including the Howard E. Day Memorial Prize; a Harvey Award, and an Ignatz Award, as well as nominations in 2005 and 2006 for the coveted Eisner Award.

Author Lucía Gonzalez
Awarding winning, author, storyteller and children's librarian, Lucía González will share tales from her new book as well as from her classic, The Bossy Gallito.  Gonzalez is a dynamic performer who works with audiences of all ages. Her presentation includes string stories, puppetry and anecdotes about growing up in Cuba and coming to America. She is a recipient of the Pura Belpre Children's Literature Honor Medal, awarded by the American Library Association. 

Miami Lakes Branch – Wednesday, November 7,   7-8 p.m.

Author and Illustrator Carla Golembe
Carla Golembe, an award winning artist, illustrator, author and teacher, will present examples of her work, which are exhibited at galleries throughout the United States. Her children's books, all of which she illustrated, include A Story of Surfing, the Story of Hula, M is for Maryland, Washington DC ABC’s, Annabelle's Big Move and Dog Magic.

Fractured Fairy Tales with Walt Timoney
It’s fractured fairytales, character voices, face painting and balloon sculptures with children’s performer Walt Timoney.  Timoney entertains with zany puppets and offers a fun time for all.
