Miami, Fl -- A new library service is alleviating an overwhelming public request for computer-assisted research and information. The Miami-Dade Public Library System has installed a wireless network that now supplements the Library’s wired network infrastructure. The project, now fully operational, enables the Library to meet patron demands for increased access to the library’s network information services. In addition to implementing wireless capabilities in all libraries, the Library System has purchased approximately 400 wireless laptop computers for patron use within the libraries. The new wireless network is also able to accommodate patrons who bring their own personal laptops equipped with wireless cards.

Immediate benefits to the public:
- Patrons will now have electronic information access throughout the libraries with no need to wait for the next available computer. They may use their own laptops equipped with a wireless card or borrow one from the Library.
- They can access library information from outside within a limited range. Patrons can now work from their car or the Cultural Plaza. Outdoor areas can now become “research” areas.
- Patrons are thus enabled to share in the Florida Electronic Library network, which gives them access to the most current information possible.

The Library has an advanced computer network with approximately 1,200 public access workstations, being the largest free Internet access provider in Miami-Dade County.
