| Miami-Dade, Fl - On Wednesday, August 23, City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz,Miami-Dade Commissioner Carlos Gimenez and City of Miami Commissioner Linda Haskins, joined Miami-Dade Public Library System Director Raymond Santiago in a groundbreaking ceremony for the future Virrick Park Branch Library.
The 3,100 square-foot, full-service library, the product of an inter-local agreement between Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade Public Library System and the City of Miami, will offer residents of Coconut Grove and nearby areas, a diverse range of educational, informational and cultural services. It will be built adjacent to the Elizabeth Virrick Park community center.
Addressing a gathering of civic leaders, Village West residents and City and Library staffers, Mayor Diaz noted that: “The construction of the library is a great example of government agencies working together.”
Since 1971, the Library System has operated and maintained eight additional libraries within the City of Miami. This productive partnership between the City and the County has given more residents of the City of Miami access to the Library System’s extensive collection of materials – one of the largest in the Southeastern United States, with more than 4 million materials.
The library is scheduled to open in late 2007.
