Miami, Fl – Children are finding their neighborhood libraries a fun place to be and beat summer record temperatures. The 2005 Summer Reading Program - “Reading Robots Rock!” has encouraged them to use the Library by making them eligible for weekly giveaways as well as four Grand Prizes: Miami Seaquarium’s “Swim with the Dolphins” gift certificate, annual passes to MetroZoo and Barnes & Noble gift certificates. Yet reading is not all there is to do there. Kids are treated to performances that include Rosy the Robot at the West Dade Regional Library, puppet shows, storytelling, music concerts, author readings, character visits and more.
Paws to Read is another popular program that drives kids’ attendance, offering them the opportunity to share good times with their friends while reading to a certified therapy dog. And in support to a safety-oriented initiative by the State Attorney’s Office, child fingerprinting programs are being held at the West Dade Regional and West Kendall Regional Libraries. The program consists of issuing a fingerprint card to parents and legal custodians for safekeeping to be used in the event that identification is required. Families can therefore provide law enforcement agencies with a tool in case a child is missing or abducted.
