Miami-Dade County, FL – “Easy, free, fast and reliable” are the terms used to describe the Wi-Fi network connection offered by the Miami-Dade Public Library System in a recent poll conducted by the Miami New Times, a South Florida weekly with a circulation of more than 100,000. Over 2000 residents voted in the annual survey, which looks at all aspects of South Florida lifestyle.
Residents who selected the Library System cited the fact that besides the free service, they did not have to buy a $5 latte, enter a password, or have a credit card number to retrieve their e-mail. A large network bandwidth eased the fear of losing data, and plenty of comfy chairs positioned near electrical outlets allowed for hours of smooth net surfing.
Launched in October 2005, the library’s Wi-Fi service allows patrons to access information throughout the library with no need to wait for the next available computer. Patrons may use their own laptop, equipped with a wireless card, or borrow one of the 400 offered by the library. Usage of the Library System’s 400 laptops averages 17,000 requests per month Patrons can also access the net from their cars or other areas outside the library, within a limited range.
