Miami-Dade County, FL   - The Miami-Dade Public Library System continues its effort to promote literacy by encouraging kids to read during the summer. The 2007 Summer Reading Program, “Serve up a Good Book,” begins on Saturday, June 9, with kick-off rallies, at the North Dade, South Dade, West Dade and West Kendall Regional Libraries, and at the West Flagler Branch Library, beginning at 11 a.m. The program continues through July 21, with a host of activities at all library branches. Weekly events include author appearances, storytelling, magic shows, arts & crafts and more.

The annual reading program, targets youths ages 18 and under, is designed so that readers of all levels can participate, including small children whose parent or guardian read to them. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the library each week, (older children and teens can register on their own), to receive a reading log and get a list of suggested materials. All participants who turn in a reading log each week, which shows that they have read, or have been read to for four or more hours, will be eligible to enter a weekly drawing to win one of several prizes.

At the end of the program all reading logs will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a chance to win one of two Apple iPods; passes for two children and two adults to Wannado City; a Miami Seaquarium Swim with the Dolphins gift certificate; a birthday party for 15 at the Miami Seaquarium; four passes to Parrot Jungle; a Romero Britto backpack filled with goodies; a pair of Heelys from Fritz’s Skate Shop; one of six autographed footballs from the Miami Dolphins; four passes for 10 families to experience the Miami Dolphins Training Camp VIP experience, and a Nintendo Wii gaming console with Wii sports game.

The 2007 Summer Reading Program is sponsored in part by, the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library, Miami-Dade County and the Miami Dolphins. For additional information please visit your nearest branch library, or call (305) 375-BOOK (2665).
