In response to alarming statistics demonstrating a low literacy level among children and a rising high school dropout rate, the Miami-Dade Public Library System created an innovative and interactive program, now in its 5th year, to improve and promote literacy in the community. The Art of Storytelling consists of a series of events that inspire children to enjoy reading while stimulating their imaginations. The program has become a year-round initiative thanks to the Library’s partnership with The Children’s Trust.
Following storytelling camps for children in March, a series of creative workshops for teens, and storytelling workshops, the 2006 series included a kick-off celebration on April 22nd at the North Dade Regional Library that brought PBS characters Clifford the Big Red Dog to share great times with the children. The program will culminate with an International Festival Day on May 20th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library, Miami-Dade Cultural Plaza, 101 West Flagler Street. Families are invited to come and enjoy international storytellers, PBS characters (Arthur & DW, Clifford, Maya & Miguel), puppet shows, live music, face painting and crafts. Miami-Dade Transit is offering free bus and Metrorail passes (while supplies last). Best of all, these events are free to the public!
The Art of Storytelling was originally created to introduce children to other cultures. Since its inception, ithas grown into a culturally enriching program combining storytelling festivals and cultural exchanges with libraries from several countries including Jamaica, Ireland, Ghana and this year, the Rio de Janeiro Public Library in Brazil.
On Festival Day, local students will perform, along with internationally renowned storytellers from Brazil and other countries including Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Bahamas and Haiti. Renowned author, poet and illustrator Ashley Bryan is performing at the festival. Bryan has won the Coretta Scott King award for illustration and the Arbuthnot Prize, a prestigious international award given in recognition of lifetime achievement.
