Miami, Fl April 23, 2004 - - Effective Monday, May 3, the Edison Branch Library, 531 NW 62nd Street, will be temporarily closed to the public due to major renovations. The library will reopen in late July. The repairs will involve a total rehabilitation budgeted at $161,000. Edison’s new interior will have new flooring, ceiling, lighting, shelving and furnishings, as well as additional computer stations.
Edison Branch opened on March 6, 1956. The original 4,600 square-foot building was constructed while the “North-South Expressway” (later to become I-95) was changing the area. The service area has been very diverse since then. Today, the library houses collections of English, French Creole, Spanish and Black History materials to serve its users’ needs. The branch was remodeled and enlarged to 6,500 square feet with more than 28,000 items and rededicated on December 4, 1991. Located across the street from Miami Edison Senior High School and two blocks from Edison Middle and Edison Park Elementary Schools, the branch serves a large young adult community.
