MIAMI, February 15, 2008 – The Miami-Dade Public Library System offers a diverse number of ongoing programs for the entire family. Throughout March, the Library System will salute women with performances highlighting their contributions to society. Special workshops for teens and musical storytime for toddlers will also be offered at branches around the community.
On Saturday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, performance artist Alexis Caputo will present Women of the Drum, a theatrical piece encouraging women to pursue their dreams. Visiting Zoraville, a tribute in song and narrative to the life and times of African American author Zora Neale Hurston, will be held on Friday, March 14, at 6:30 pm, at the North Dade Regional Library, and author Diana Abu-Jaber, whose work Crescent was awarded the 2004 PEN Center USA award for literary fiction, will discuss her latest publication Origin, on Saturday, March 15, 3 p.m. at the West Kendall Regional Library.
Workshops for teens include “WordSpeak,” a Miami Teen Spoken Word Project to be held March 18-26, under the direction of actor Teo Castellanos and wordspeak artist Dasha Kelly of HBO Def Poetry Jam, image building, life skills and etiquette with consultant Myra Solomon, and SAT preparation.
Little ones will be captivated by the Freddick Bratcher and Company Dance Theater’s “Bedtime Storydance,” a contemporary ballet interpretation of classic French children’s songs and the Momentum Dance Company’s enactment of Mark Twain’s classic, The Celebrated Jumping Frogs of Calavera County.

Theatrical Performances:
Harry T. Moore - America’s first civil rights martyr
Before civil right marches and bus boycotts Harry T. Moore worked in Jim Crow Florida to organize the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Progressive Voters League. In 1951, a bomb, placed under Moore’s bedroom ended his life. Writer, director and performer Bob Devin Jones portrays Moore on the eve of his tragic death in 1951.

Freddick Bratcher and Company Contemporary Dance Theater presents a Storydance for Bedtime
Classic French children’s songs interpreted through contemporary ballet with narration and music. A lovely alternative to reading before bedtime, and sure to capture the hearts of little ones.
