Welcome to the Miami-Dade Public Library System

Changing Lives @ Miami-Dade Public Libraries!

As a child, Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan would marvel at National Geographic magazines found at the library, which revealed to her the magnificent colors of the universe, especially those of the African people. Having a strong human services background, she believes children need to be exposed to the Library from their early learning stages, even exploring other tongues in their development years. Aware of the Library’s extensive foreign language collection that includes audio books, CDs and DVDs, Commissioner Jordan encourages parents to check-out language materials for their kids. In her words, “early language instruction can help reduce any divisiveness that may arise in our community in future years.” She cites the Library’s Jumpstart preschool story kit program for child care centers and the year-round Art of Storytelling program as pillars when it comes to enticing a love of reading in children.

History Month celebration at the Miami-Dade Public Library, and residents of all ages are participating in an exciting series that includes book presentations, musical performances, storytelling and other family events. Library programs that commemorate the rich heritage of our diverse community are applauded by the Commissioner. She cheers the Library’s numerous initiatives to create learning bridges among our various ethnic groups, considering the Library “the place to go and be anywhere in the universe, where you choose to be.”

Commissioner Jordan frequently visits neighborhood branches as well as the North Dade Regional Library. “Due to my busy schedule, I’m always checking out books on tape to enjoy them while I drive home. Transit is hassle-free listening to your favorite novels and thrillers,” she says. She plans on attending Black History Month events in February. “It’s all about reading, guiding, and empowering young folks.”

    Quote:

“The Library has no restraints. It opens so many doors in a child’s mind…. It helped me expand my awareness of other cultures. I hope it does the same in my grandchildren’s lives.”
