Library To Celebrate Literacy for Students with Visual Disabilities
Miami, Fl – On Tuesday, January 25, Miami-Dade Public Library System will be hosting Wild About Reading, a celebration of literacy for Miami-Dade County Public School Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade students who are blind and visually impaired. The event is being held at the Main Library Auditorium, 101 West Flagler St, and will run from approximately 10:00 am to 12:45 pm. The program – which celebrates Braille Literacy Month – is the result of a unique collaborative effort between Miami-Dade County Public Schools Programs for the Visually Impaired, Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Talking Books Library, and the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Approximately 70-Pre Kindergarten through Grade 5 students who are visually impaired from 42 schools have been invited to attend Wild About Reading. This event is intended to promote reading in all formats, including auditory, Braille and large print, with the hope of fostering a positive attitude about both academic and pleasure reading for students who are visually impaired. Wild About Reading will feature storytellers sponsored by the Library System, adults who are blind and visually impaired reading books to small groups of students, and a sampling of the various ways books can be enjoyed (including descriptive videos) by individuals with visual impairments. Students will have the chance to interact with volunteers, professionals and peers throughout the day.
This literacy program will enable students to become exposed to favorite and new pieces of literature in accessible formats and encourage the beginning of a lifelong love for reading. For additional information, please contact the Talking Books Library at (305) 751-8687.
