Miami-Dade, Fl – The Miami-Dade Public Library System celebrates Black History Month 2007, with an extensive line up of programs at library branches throughout the county. The public is invited to enjoy nationally renowned authors, jazz concerts, storytelling performances and art exhibitions.
Highlights of the month include author/storyteller Donna Washington, who will perform stories from around the world; storyteller Awele Makeba who will interpret her rendition of I’m Not Getting On Until Jim Crow Gets Off: The Untaught History of the Montgomery Bus Boycott; The Core Ensemble a chamber music theatre production, which will celebrate the life and times of four powerful African American women; and the Freddick Bratcher and Company Contemporary Dance Theater who will delight audiences of all ages with a “Storydance on Anansi.”
View the history of black barbershops at the Main Library in To the Barbershop: Call and Response Series #2, a photographic exhibition by Richard Davenport, depicting black barbershops in Miami during the early 1980’s. The North Dade Regional Library will host an exhibition and performance around the sounds and influence of jazz. A Jazz Renaissance: Images from the Permanent Collection isanexhibition which presents jazz in a historical and contemporary form. Visitors can enjoy a live performance by vocalist/violinist Nicole Yarling on February 21, at 7 p.m.
