Welcome to the Miami-Dade Public Library System

Miami-Dade Public Library System Continues Aggressive Expansion Plan - Four new libraries scheduled to open in 2008

(MIAMI, January 9, 2008) - The Miami-Dade Public Library System continues to deliver on its pledge to expand its current network of branches in an effort to meet the educational and recreational needs of Miami-Dade County residents. Since 2001, the Library System has opened nine new facilities, including the first full construction project since 1985, has broken ground on five new branches, which are slated to open later this year, has increased the fleet of mobile libraries from two to four and has plans for the renovations of several existing libraries and the complete rebuilding of a hurricane damaged branch.

Under the Library System’s Capital Plan initiative, eight storefront facilities, which include the new 3,000 square foot Opa locka and Sunset branches have opened. In December 2006, the Golden Glades Branch opened its doors and marked the first library to be constructed since the 1985 opening of the Main Library in downtown Miami.

Five additional libraries are currently under construction, four of which will open throughout the year at International Mall, Elizabeth Virrick Park in Coconut Grove, Kendale Lakes and Pinecrest. The Naranja Branch is expected to open in 2009. Groundbreakings will also be held in 2008 for three branches in Palmetto Bay, Arcola Lakes and a new Hispanic Branch for Miami’s Little Havana.

“The expansion of the Miami-Dade Public Library System means that more residents can access services, more children and seniors can get answers to their questions and everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy free programs all year long,” says Library Director Raymond Santiago.
