    Miami-Dade Public Library System presents authors, storytellers and cultural workshops throughout the month of January

    (MIAMI, JANUARY, 2, 2008- The Miami-Dade Public Library System invites the community to enjoy authors, musicians and dancers, and to participate in a series of    cultural programs in celebration of Black History Month.

    Flutes Sweets and Tickletoons will delight youngsters with the melodic storytelling of Keith Torgan and flutist Barbara Siesel, at the Country Walk Branch on Tuesday, January 8, at 11 a.m., and at the Coral Reef Branch on Wednesday, January 9, at 12:30 p.m.  Author Charles Pero will captivate a more mature audience as he discusses works from his “Twisted Killer” series at the Palm Springs North Branch on Saturday, January 12, at 1 p.m.  

    In a prelude to Black History Month the story of Anansi will leap from the page and stage as author Geoffrey Philp shares his book Grandpa Sydney’s Anancy Stories at theModel City Branch on Thursday, January 17, at 10 a.m.,while the Freddick Bratcher and Company Contemporary Dance Theatre presents the mythical creature in a “Storydance,” at the West Dade Regional Library, on Saturday, January 26, at 11 a.m. Poet and author Nanette Orange will share her work “Souls Whisperings- Poems for Victorious Living,” at the Kendall Branch on Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m., and Reggie Paul, known for his smooth vocal style and fine guitar playing, will offer an interactive program of music and dance for children at several branches starting Saturday, January 26.

    All events are free and open to the public.  

    Program Lineup:

    Flute Sweets and Tickletoons Presents: Little Kids Little Songs
    Rolling in mud, climbing trees, flying like an airplane and getting rid of monsters – is what “Little Kids Little Songs” is all about. Each song was created to engage the imagination of the very young. Soft, sweet, playful and funny - the original music and storytelling of Keith Torgan, and the virtuosity of flutist Barbara Siesel will tickle the youngest of audience members.  All ages are welcome.

    Read Around the Town – a multicultural journey of stories, games and hands-on activities with storyteller and librarian Melinda Munger
    Bring your 7-10 year-old child in for our four-week literacy series which focuses on reading and storytelling. This program is sponsored in partnership with The Friends of the North Miami Public Library and the Dade Community Foundation.

    The Killer Mind: An Author’s Perspective
    Charles Pero, author of the “Twisted Killer” series, delves into the mind of serial killers and discusses their psychological make-up, motives and similarities. Pero will also discuss ways to help women protect themselves from serial predators.  Works by Pero include The Maze Murderer, Tainted Blood, Torn Apart and Black Ribbon.

    Geoffrey Philp, author of Grandpa Sydney’s Anancy Stories, Benjamin, My Son and other works, shares how his Caribbean roots inspire him to write novels for children.  His latest work, Grandpa Sydney’s Anancy Stories, draws on the rich oral tradition of Anancy stories that are told and re-told in West Africa, Jamaica and the Caribbean.

    Nanette Orange - Soul Whisperings- Poems for Victorious LivingLocal author and poet Nanette Orange shares her timeless poems of love and romance, family sanctity, self-awareness, and nature's divinity. From rhyming stanzas to emotionally charged free verses, Orange's writing uplifts with a deep sincerity anyone can appreciate.

    Adinkra Symbols Workshops
    Under the direction of artist Brenda Jordan, children will explore the symbolism of an ancient African language by designing and painting a panel for themselves in this interactive and educational workshop.

    The Freddick Bratcher and Company Contemporary Dance Theater Presents a “Storydance” on Anansi
    Renowned dancer and choreographer Freddick Bratcher brings this contemporary dance work to entertain and to enrich his audience. This entertaining program retells stories related to the cultural diversity of Florida through the art of dance. The performance will feature the history of Anansi and the folk-tale of "Anansi and Fire."
